Focus groups can use various variations of the procedure. At first, participants are asked a frequent question to bring at least 3 or 4 items that represent their ideal environment. So let’s see some variations of focus groups.
- Two way focus group
This type of focus group allows for two-way communication. There two groups one target group to listen and learn from a related group. Suppose, a doctor viewed a group of patients discussing their treatment they desired. So, this focus group was held to determine their reactions.
- Dual moderator group
Two moderators present to interviewed the selected focus group. These two moderators are responsible for specific tasks. thus one moderator is responsible for the smooth flow of the session and another moderator is responsible for ensuring specific issues are discussed.
- Dueling moderator group
There are two moderators but the tasks are different. if one moderator supports one issue then the other moderator goes to the opposite position. It means they deliberately take opposite positions on the issues to be discussed.
- Respondent moderator group
- Client participant group
Here, the client is selected for the discussion group and made part of the discussion. However, their primary role is to make a clarification of the discussed topic. His makes the group process is more effective.
The moderator selects a person to play his role temporarily to improve group dynamics. In these types of focus groups, the participant plays a moderator role.
- Mini group
These types of groups consist of one moderator and 4or 5 respondents. They are used when the issues need more extensive probing.
- Tele-session group
It is a focus group technique that uses a telecommunications network. This session is conducted by phone using the conference call technique.
- Electronic group interviewing
Electronic devices are used for interviewing the respondents. Such as mouse, keypads, pc, laptop, etc. if moderators want a result of certain issues, he may create poll the focus group participant. In that case, respondents express their opinion by using those devices. After that, the results are instantly displayed on the big screen.
